What do the social determinants of health affect?

what is health inequity?
Differences in health status among population
Health status/ outcome due to UNJUST, UNFAIR or PREVENTABLE factors
what is the social gradient?
Graded relationship between SES an health in which poorest have worst health status.
What are the 4 causes of the social gradient?
Natural selection (poorer= earlier events in life)
behavioral/ cultural (triggers their disproportiante ill health via drinking, smoking etc)
structural (poor housing, overcrowding, access to education, unemployment)
psychosocial/social capital (stress inducing factors)
Inverse care law
mismatch between patient’s needs and medical care supply
victim blaming
blaming individual for illness without considering context
institutionalised racism
institutions or systems that create or maintain racial inequity, often as a result of hidden institutional biases in policies, practices and procedures, that privilege some groups and disadvantage others
social exclusions
(social/institutional factors that put people in an involuntary position to be excluded from accessing resources, services and assets).
