Who is more likely to experince Acculturative stress and why?
Often experienced by refugees and asylum seekers (over immigrants and sojourners) due to lack of control, choice and preparedness
What are the four outcomes of acculturation?
Integration: maintaining original culture whilst adopting norms
Assimilation: don’t wish to maintain original culture and only adopt societies norms.
Isolation: when individuals value holding onto orgnial culture
Marginalization: little possibility or interest in having relations with own or other culture.
What often leads to linguistic misunderstandings? (relationship between…)
Expressive behavior - Non-verbal and phonology (words/phrases)
Content – interpretation based on our prior experience
Attitudes and values – interpretation of language based on prior attitudes and values

What is Ethnocentrisim and what can it cause?
Ethnocentrism
Viewing own culture as correct
Cultural bias
Cause non-cooperation and does not allow others ot learn enough about others cultures.

Worker project own cultural values to patients of different values.
The patient may not receive help needed.
what are the three types of racism?
Institutionalsed = access to resources, services and healthcare opportunities different
Personally mediated = prejudice/ discrimination about ability, motive and intents (of others)
Acceptance (by stigmatized race) of negative messages about worth and ability.
