What is indigenous science?

A

Space/land (land is teacher/is creation), constant motion and flux (integration on biological rhythms and ecological patterns, demonstrated by trickster stories), all things being animate and containing a spirit (everything is alive, once natural element has been changed by humans it doesn’t have a spirit anymore) relationships (believe people are connected through blood but also environment), and renewal (restoration on varying levels, maintains balance, everything is always changing).

3 themes: non interference- want people to contrarily choose best way to behave/cooperate, prevents conflict

emotional restraint- promotes and ensure balance, avoid anger

sharing- share material/non material to be generous and promote harmony, avoid accumulation of possessions

A

Collective journey to an evolving destination with hope that steps taken will advance reconciliation. Both indigenous and non indg must walk together/develop shared goals for future of education.

A
  1. Trauma awareness- trauma central to develop element, relationships with substance use/physical and mental health
  2. Emphasis on safety and trustworthiness- ensure informed consent, create crisis plans, present clear information
  3. Opportunity for choice/collaboration/connection- give self determination, establish safe connections, equalize power
  4. Strengths based and skill building- clients assist to identify strengths, emphasize teaching for recognizing triggers/staying present
