Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches Flashcards
What is integrative health?
Combination of best practices from conventional, complementary, and alternative approaches. It’s holistic and is focused on underlying cause of illness/imbalance in the body.
What is conventional medicine?
Refers to western healthcare system and practices derived from biomedical knowledge.
What is complementary and alternative approach?
C- used with conventional medicines, contributes/enhances conventional approach
A- used instead of conventional medicine
What are the 5 types of CAM?
Natural/biological based, mind-body interventions, energy fields, manipulative/body based practices, and whole medical systems.
CAM trends and who’s more likely to use them?
Most commonly used therapies in canada are chiropractic and massage therapy. CAM cost not covered by insurance or government.
More likely- women, people with money, elderly, people with many health conditions, chronically ill.
What is natural or biological based?
Includes items found in nature like animal products, AA, plants, pre/probiotics, medical use of cannabis, homeopathic meds, traditional meds, food diets, vitamins.
What is a botanical?
Extracted from plants/animal/microorganisms. Active ingredients prepared in pills/powder/creams.
What is mind body interventions?
Focus on interactions among brain/mind/body. How emotion/mental/social/spiritual factors affect health. Can help but not proven to reduce stress/BP, decreased tachycardia, increase lung capacity.
Examples- meditation, dance/music/art therapy, yoga, aromatherapy, imagery.
What are energy fields?
Illness is caused by disturbance of bio fields. Flow/balance of life energies are necessary for maintaining health. Restore flow of qi. Effectiveness of this hasn’t been established.
Examples- acupuncture, cupping, tai chi, reiki, therapeutic touch
What is manipulative and body based practices?
Based on manipulation/movement of one or more body parts. Focus on systems/structures of body (like joints, bones, circulatory/lymph systems)
Examples- spinal manipulation (chiropractic) and massage therapy are most common.
What are whole medical systems?
Based on complete systems of theory/practice and often are evolved prior to and independent of biomedical.
Examples are traditional Chinese meds, naturopathic meds (from Germany, water therapy), homeopathic meds, traditional aboriginal healing, ayurveda meds (science of life from india).
Political, economic, and cultural influences on CAM?
P- roel of governments is to regulate CAM and help with research to prove safety of CAM. Evidence on CAM needed for policy makers.
E- CAM is growing industry that generates lots of money and affects all countries
C- culture/religion are linked to some CIH therapies like Chinese medicine, also indigenous healing practices and spirituality
Risks with integrative therapy?
Patients tend to not report CAM, omission can increase risk of life threatening interactions between CAM therapies/biomedical. Also risk of allergic reactions, clients may decline conventional treatment, women pregnant/older adults may not be aware of risk to due age/status.
Legal and ethical issues with integrative health?
Not all CAM are regulated, challenges with CAM (safety, quality control, monitoring, regulation, efficacy).
Holistic therapy?
Being present/imagery/meditation/massage/therapeutic listening and touch. Support client on managing stress.
