What is an immigrant and refugee?
I- person who is/who has ever been landed immigrant, person has been granted right to live in canada permanently.
R- Someone living outside their home country that’s unable or unwilling to return because of fear of persecution.
What is permanent resident and temporary resident?
Permanent- economic class, family class, humanitarian class (refugees resettled from abroad)
Temporary- migrant workers, international student, refugee claimants (those arriving in canada claiming to refugees)
What is migration?
Global health issue. Increasing globalization/transnational movement of people. Influences health of migrants/health services in country of origin/country migrating to/
What are some reasons for migration?
Improved economic/quality of life opportunities, address shortages in labour sectors/skill levels, temporary work programs, war, poverty, lack of freedom, and people forcibly displaced.
What are some health inequities experienced by refugees/immigrants?
Access to immediate care, differences in care compared to Canadians, cultural competency is problematic. Precious housing, psychological trauma, sexual violence.
What is their health like post migration?
Most report very good health before moving but then after some groups are at risk of stroke/diabetes/infectious disease. Declines because of barriers to healthcare. Also know as healthy immigrant effect.
What are post migration conditions?
Lack of proficiency in english (delays jobs), poor working conditions, lack social support, structural oppression, maybe poverty.
What are some barriers affecting utilization of healthcare?
Financial cost for uninsured services, SDOH, lack of public transport, accessibility problems, negative experiences, no cultural competency.
