What is an Inclusive Environment?
A
- One that can be used safely, easily and with dignity by everyone (Construction Industry Council definition).
- One that does not physically or socially segregate, discriminate or isolate.

Can you name some different user needs when it comes to use of the built environment?
A
- Disabilities - tactile surfaces, ramps, lowered surfaces, noise reduction (for autism), signage and visual aids, hearing loops etc., colour rendering and avoiding glare (for visual impariement or autism).
- Parenting - breastfeeding and baby-changing
- Trans inclusive - unisex toilets.

Can you name some of the legislative and other drivers of Inclusive Design?
A
- Equality Act 2010 - must make ‘reasonable adjustments’.
- National Planning Policy Framework - Section 8 references healthy, inclusive and safe places.
- Approved Doc M
- BS8300 - goes beyond minimum requirements of Part M.
- Changing Places Campaign - campaign to provide more accessible toilets with height adjustable changing bench and hoists.
