What is BCIS? How often is it updated?
A
- The Building Cost Information Service
- The Dilapidations Estimating Prices are updated every 2-3 years, but an ‘inflation factor’ can be applied for any Quarter of a Financial year, based on Consumer Prices Index.

Can BCIS be relied upon to negotiate dilaps settlements?
A
- Ultimately, no.
- There are too many other factors at play.
- If a party decides to procure works, these costs will apply and not those in BCIS, as long as Section 18 of the L&T Act does not apply.

What are the GDPR reguations - what are the obligations that they place on firms?
A
- General Data Protection Regulations 2018.
- Personal data (relating to an identified or identifiable individual e.g. IP address).
- Establishes several principles that ‘controllers’ need to demonstrate compliance with:
- Fairness/transparancy
- Collected for specific purpose
- Only collect what is necessary
- Ensure accurate
- Keep for no longer than necessary.
- Security is ensured

- 2 tiers of administrative fines:
- Levied by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

- Controller - firms deciding what to do with data.
- Processor - those managing data on behalf of a controller.

What does GDPR mean for businesses?
A
- Written consent needs to be gained if doing anything outside of ‘normal’ activities.
- Strengthen ‘opt-in’ functionality.
- Re-write privacy policies
- Storage of data needs to be documented strictly.

A
- Personal Information
- Under GDPR - anything that identifies a person directly or indirectly e.g. IP address.

How is Brexit applicable to data management?
A
- If you hold data of client’s in EU, then there will be additional layers of compliance you will need to adhere to.
- EU data regs are slightly different to the UK GDPR regs.

Can you name some benefits that BIM could bring to the construction industry.
A
- BIM already commonly used in the construction phase with the use of complex 3D modelling containing mulitple layers of information.
- If operational information could be incorporated into these models, there is a huge opportunity for end-users to have all the information they need to operate and maintain new buildings effectively.
- This has implications for efficiency savings in both carbon emissions and costs.
