What is impetigo?
A
A superficial bacterial skin infection caused by Staph aureus/Strep pyogenes

How is impetigo spread?
A
- Direct contact with discharges from the scabs of an infected person
- Spread via hands, toys, clothes and environment
- Incubation period is 4-10 days

How does impetigo present?
A
- Golden, crusted skin lesions typically found around the mouth

How is impetigo managed?
A
- Hydrogen peroxide 1% cream
- Fusidic acid cream
- Oral Flucloxacillin can be given if extensive disease
- School exclusion until lesions have crusted over/48 hours after starting treatment
