Immunity and Inflammation Flashcards
Week 5
What is a pathogen?
Any organism / microbe which can enter the body and cause disease
What is an antigen?
A protein (found on pathogens) that stimulates an immune response
What does the innate immune system consist of?
Non-specific physical or chemical barriers / defence mechanisms which keep non-self cells from entering the body and causing harm e.g. skin
What does the adaptive immune system consist of?
Specific defence mechanism which targets specific antigens on pathogens and develops an immunological memory
Name the mechanisms that act as a first line of defence in the innate immune system
- Skin
- Sweat
- Urinary tract - one way flow of urine
- Mucous membranes
- Cilia
- Hair
- Digestive system - stomach acid
Name the mechanisms that act as the second line of defence of the innate immune system
- Inflammatory response
- Phagocytosis
What is the scientific name for a white blood cell?
Leukocyte
What is a progenitor cell?
Major histocompatibility complex…
Where do B-lymphocytes / cells mature?
In the bone marrow
Where do T-lymphocytes / cells mature?
In the thymus gland
B-cells…
Humoral response…
Plasma cells…
