Cardiovascular system Flashcards
Week 3
Name the membrane that surrounds and protects the heart
Pericardium
In which direction is the apex of the heart normally pointed?
Downward, forward and to the left of the midline
Which layer of the heart wall consists of cardiac muscle tissue?
Myocardium
Through which structure does blood pass from the right atrium to the right ventricle
The tricuspid atrioventricular valve
What is the aortic semilunar valve?
It is located between, and regulates blood flow from, the left ventricle into the aorta, which is the main artery that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
What is the ductus arteriosus?
A blood vessel found in foetuses which connects the pulmonary trunk to the aorta, by passing the lungs since foetuses get their oxygen supply from the mothers’ placenta
Why is the myocardium of the left ventricle thicker than that of the right ventricle?
It has to generate higher pressure to overcome the greater resistance of the longer systemic circulation route versus the shorter pulmonary circulation route
Which valve prevents blood from flowing back into the right ventricle?
Pulmonary semilunar valve
Do the right atrium and right ventricle contain oxygenated or deoxygenated blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Which blood vessel is responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the muscle of the heart (myocardium)?
Coronary artery
