Define peristalsis
It is the involuntary muscle movement that occurs in the digestive system
What is fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity known as?
Ascites
What is the mesentery?
A fold of the peritoneum that is and fan shaped binds the small intestine to the posterior abdominal wall

Fold of peritoneum that binds large intestine to the posterior wall

Chewing, crushing & breaking into smaller fragments
What is the role of motor neurons in the digestive system?
Controls motility and secretion by epithelial cells
What is the role of the sensory neurones in the digestive system?
Chemoreceptors and stretch receptors
What is the link between the GI system and the autonomic nervous system?
- Parasympathetic stimulation via the vagus nerve increases GI secretion and motility
- Sympathetic stimulation decreases GI secretion and motility
