Immune System Review Flashcards
immunity
the ability to resist injury or infection
lymphatic system
a network of cells, vessels and tissues that provide immune surveillance
lymph nodes
solid, spherical bodies that are packed with macrophages and lymphocytes that are cells that are specialized to recognize anything that is foreign to the body
innate body defences
present before an infection has occurred and that provide the first line of protection from pathogens
phagocytes
the primary cells of innate immunity once physical barriers are breached. engulf pathogens and other substances
interferons
antimicrobial proteins that are crucial components of the innate body defence system
complement system
cluster of 20 plasma proteins that combine in a specific sequence and order when infection occurs
histamine
is a key chemical mediator of inflammation
adaptive defences
immune response to foreign substances and certain threats
antigens
microbes and foreign substances that elicit an immune response.
B cell
known as a B lymphocyte and is triggered when an antigen comes in contact with it
plasma cells
primary function is to secrete antibodies specific to the antigen that initiated the challenge
antibodies
also known as immunoglobulins, they interact with antigens to neutralize or mark them for destruction by other cells of the immune response
T cells
also known as T lymphocytes. second branch of response to the immune response
cytokines
hormone like proteins that regulate the intensity and duration of the immune response and mediate cell to cell communication
