  • wash hands, ensure gloves available
  • introduce self, explain procedure
  • provide privacy
  • raise bed to appropriate height
  • raise opposite side bed rail and stay on one side of the bed
  • remove gown and cover with bath blanket
  • wash, rinse, and dry one body part at a time
  • encourage clients participation and independence
  • protect bed linen by placing a towel under each body part as it is being washed
  • rinse cloth after each body part
  • change water when dirty or cold
  • always wash, CLEAN TO DIRTY, HEAD TO TOE
  • start with eyes, WASH FROM INNER TO OUTER canthus, rinse cloth between eyes
  • face, axilla, chest, or under breasts, hands, back, peri care
  • once peri care has been provided, water and cloth must be changed if you are returning to other body areas
  • be sure to dry all areas thoroughly
  • provide back rub with gentle circular strokes, use lotion if possible
  • assist with clean gown or clothing
