Immune System and Bodt Defenses Flashcards
Body defense
Protection against injury
Immunity
Protection against foreign microorganisms
The immune system is
Not a well defined system, provide immune response, can be found through the body
The immune system has the ability to
Determine foreign from self
Auto immune disease
Identifies self or antigens as foreign
Antigen
Molecule that can generate an immune response
Ani tiger is derived from
Antibody generator
Antigens can be either
Self or non self (foreign)
Passive immunity
Short lived, maternal or transfer of serum form immune to non-immune
Acquired
Long lived, immunity from a successful immune response
Two subdivisions
Innate, acquired
Innate
Natural immunity, first line, non-specific
Acquired
Also adaptive, second line, a specific response
Several methods of proteins
Physical barrier, normal micro flora, soluble factors, inflammation, phagocytosis
Innate immunity characteristics
Quick response, non-specific response, no memory, short-lived
Two types of acquired immunity
Humoral (B lymphocytes) and cell-mediated (T lymphocytes)
Five types of antibodies
- IgG (IgY in avian)
- IgM
- IgA
- IgE
- IgD
Primary responses
IgM, long latency, short duration, low antibody titer
Secondary responses
IgG, short latency, longer duration, high antibody titer
B lymphocytes
Originate in bone marrow, can be native or memory
Functions of lymphocytes
Antibody production, differentiate into plasma and memory cells
Naive b-cell
Not exposed to Antigen
Memory b-cell
Exposed to antigen(first) and long living and respond to secondary infection (second)
Types of t lymphocytes
T-helper, t-cytotoxic, t-suppressor, t-memory
