superficial-thickness burn: damage to epidermis, red, no blisters, heals in 3-6 days
superficial partial-thickness burn: damage to dermis, red, blisters, edema, heals in 10-21 days
deep partial-thickness burn: damage to dermis, red skin with white areas, no blisters, heals in 3-6 weeks
full-thickness burn: damage to epidermis and dermis, varying colours, needs skin grafting, healing takes weeks to months
deep full-thickness burn: injury to bones/muscles, black and hard skin, healing takes months, needs skin grafting
