IFSTA Aerial Chapter 4 Apparatus Inspection Flashcards
Steps to check Applied Air Loss
Engine Off
Parking Brake Released
Press Brake pedal to floor
After one minute, air pressure should not drop more than 3 PSI
Air Compressor Cut-in and Cut-Out
After emptying the air brake reservoir and starting the engine the air compressor should “cut out” around 125 and 130 psi
Apply brake lowering pressure in the tanks by 5 to 10 psi increments until the needle on the air gauge begins to move upward. Cut in Must Occur no lower than 85 psi
Size code of tires imprinted on the side wall
3 digit number: Tire width in MM
Middle Number: Comparison of height to width in percent
Next Letter: Construction type
Last Number: Size of wheel rim in inches
Maximum safe speed rating of tires is marked usually as
Q=mph
Steering wheel play
no more than 10 degrees
NFPA 1911 states brakes should be throughly inspected how often and at what percent grade must the parking brake hold the vehicle
1 year
20% grade
When the airbrake system is full, with the engine off, air pressure should not drop more than _______ psi per minute
2 psi
With Engine Off, Pressing the brake pedal all the way down air loss should not be more than _______ per minte
3 psi
at operating RPMS, At what rate should air be built up from 85-100 psi
Within 45 seconds
Inspection of the turn table assembly
Visually Check the pinion
Turntable teeth for damages
When Testing aerials through Non Destructive Testing how is a magnetic inspection performed
Performed on accessible welds and steel components
Involves magnetizing the area which will attract iron powder applied to the surface
Collections of powder on the surface, reveal areas with flaws and defects
When Testing aerials through Non Destructive testing how are conductivity readings used
Aluminum ladders can be tested by registering of hardness and by taking conductivity readings
A wide divergence in these readings through out the aerial indicate a change in the integrity of the material
Where is Ultrasound inspection used when doing Aerial testing
Ultrasonic inspection is performed on
-Stabilizer pins
-raising and extension cylinder mounting pins
-Aerial Hinge Pins
-mounting bolts
-rotation bearing bolts
-aerial support structure bolts
Vibrations introduced to these areas bounce back to the source and if patterns return different there are flaws in the system
