The boer war happened in South Africa in 1899 and 40% of volunteers were unfit to be soldiers due to poor health. This led government to set up a special committee that investigated the condition of young men with most being unhealthy

A

liberal reforms set up where

  • 1906 there were free school meals, -1907 there were free medical inspections for school children
  • 1908 children became protected persons to make sure future population is fit and healthy, -1908 there was an old age pension introduced so old people could support themselves
  • 1909 there were job centres introduced for unemployed people to find their own work
  • 1909 introduction of housing and town planning act to raise living standards of those in the lower end of society and made back to back housing illegal
  • 1911 unemployment benefits

  • Introduced the NHS and the welfare state ( all the social things like benefits)
  • the welfare state which got rid of want as it gave people a monthly allowance, the poor got benefits to reduce want, slum housing was removed to get rid of squalor, The NHS gave people free prescription getting rid of disease
