What are the 3 types of IBS?
IBS-C = mostly constipation
IBS-D = mostly diarrhoea
IBS-M = mostly mixed; alternating C/D
What are symptoms of IBS?
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Relieved by defaecation
Altered stool form/ frequency
How is IBS diagnosed?
Exclusions of Coeliac, IBD and infections by:
Serology
Faecal calprotectin
ESR/CRP/ blood cultures
What is treatment for conservative IBS?
Education and reassurance
eg for IBS-C suggest eating more fibre
What is treatment for moderate IBS?
Laxatives for IBS-C like Senna
Antimotility drug for IBS-D like loperamide
What is treatment for severe IBS?
TCA (like amitriptyline )
Consider CBT or GI referral
What can IBS be related to?
Psychology
Stress
Anxiety
Drugs
Diet
