IAMSAR Flashcards
1
Q
Duties of OSC IAMSAR
A
- obtain SAR plan from MRCC
- Coordinate SAR operations on the location
- act as a base for communication between assets.
- command and control of the operation
- Provide sitreps to the RCC.
- maintain a detailed record of the operation.
- report number and names of survivors
2
Q
As master how would you plan SAR datum?
A
- establish a datum
1) reported psn
2) brgs / sightings
3) est surface movements - datum position for the search area to be calculated:
1)drfit (leeway & current)
2)leeway direction and wind speed)
datum position is found by moving from the incident position, drift distance and direction and plotting these on a chart.
3
Q
Factors to consider in deciding what search pattern to use?
A
- number of assets
- size of area
- type of distress craft
- weather and vis
- sea conditions
- arrival time at datum
- day or night
4
Q
Expanding Square SAR pattern
A
- most effective when close to datum and info is accurate
- only useful for one vessel
- commence at datum
- first leg directly into wind to minimise errors
- a sutiable marker could be dropped at the datum.
5
Q
Vector Search
A
- most effective when info is accurate including datum
- circular area with datum in the middle
- aircraft and one vessel is ideal
- suitable marker could be dropped at datum
- aircraft radius ususally 5 - 20 NM
- for vessels radius is ususally 5-20NM and each turn is 120 deg, normally to stbd.
6
Q
Parallel track search
A
- large area
- uncertain datum and info
- good for multiple ships
- parallel along the sides of sub-area
-
7
Q
Coordinated vessel - aircraft search pattern.
A
- creeping line search
- vessel and aircraft
- higher probability of detection than aircraft searching alone. VL steams in course and speed set by OSC and aircraft uses as nav point. equal track spacing.
8
Q
You see a liferaft but the crew say master missing? Action
A
Sector search.
