Who must report to MAIB?

A

Master of a UK ship must notify the MAIB of any marine casualty or marine incident.

It is a legal requirement to that any marine casulaty or marine incident is reported to MAIB. As Master, what is reportable?

A

Marine Casulaty:
- death or serious injury
- loss of a person from a ship
- loss or presumed loss of a ship
- material damage that significantly affects the structural integrity, performance that require major repair or replacement
- ship being unfit to proceed to sea & requires condition of class
- at sea, ship require towage or shore assistance
- stranding or disabling of a ship i.e. collision.
- pollution casued by damage to the ship.

Marine Incident
- Close 1/4s situation where action was required to avoid a collision
- any event that had the potential to cause injury or harm
- a fire that did not result in material damage
- a grounding (temp) on soft mud for example
- a person overboard who was recovered
- snagging of fishing gear resulting in a dangerous heel.
