Associated with diet, increased sympathetic activity, or peripheral resistance

Due to other disease, renovascular most common
What are some other causes of secondary hypertension?
Endocrine, hyperaldosterone, pheo
What are some common complications seen with hypertension?
Cardiovascular
Neurological
Renal
Optic
What is included in the work-up of hypertension?
EKG
Fundoscopic Exam
Creatinine
Cholesterol
Urine albumin/creatinine
What drug classes should be prescribed to African American’s diagnosed with HTN?
Thiazides and Ca blockers
What drug classes should be avoided in African American’s because they can cause angioedema and are less-effective?
ACEi and ARBs
