Define hydrocoele?
A
The excessive collection of serous fluid within the tunica vaginalis

What are the risk factors for hydrocoele?
A
- Male
- Increased intraperitoneal pressure or fluid
- Inflammation or injury to scrotum
- Connective tissue disorders
- Filariasis (parasite)

What are the two types of hydrocoele?
A
- Communicating (patent processus vaginalis creates connection between peritoneum and tunica vaginalis)
- Non-communicating (closed porcessus vaginalis no connection)

What is the epidemiology of hydrocoele?
A
very common in infants in their first year of life (when processus vaginalis is patent)

What are the presenting symptoms of hydrocoele?
A
- Scrotal swelling
- May be asymptomatic
- Pain

What are the signs of hydrocoele on physical examination?
A
- Scrotal swelling
- Transilluminates
- Fluctuation test (shifting fluid)
- Can get above the swelling

What are the appropriate investigations for hydrocoele?
A
- Usually clinical diagnosis
