  1. Urothelial (transitional cell) carcinoma - 90%

2. Non-urothelial carcinoma = Squamous cell and adenocarcinoma - 10%

What are risk factors for bladder cancer?

A
  1. Smoking
  2. Aromatic amines – rubber industry, dye stuffs (naphthylamines and benzidine)
  3. Chronic cystitis
  4. Cyclophosphamide treatment (chemotherapy)
  5. Pelvic irradiation
  6. Schistosomiasis – inc risk of squamous cell carcinoma
  7. Arsenic in drinking water
  8. White ethnicity

A

Transitional cells are able to change shape and stretch. They make up the lining of the renal pelvis, ureters, bladder and urethra.
