What is the triad of symptoms of haemolytic uraemia syndrome?
A
- haemolytic anaemia (normocytic anaemia)
- thrombocytopenia
- AKI

What is HUS?
Why does it cause the symptoms that it does?
A
Thrombosis in small blood vessels
- platelets get caught up in clots -> thrombocytopenia
- gets clogged up in small blood vessels in kidney -> AKI

It will occur following what?
A
5-7 days following period of gastroenteritis

What causes HUS?
A
Shiga toxin
from E.Coli 0157 + shigella

How is it managed?
A
Supportive management however it is a medical emergency and requires patients to be under observation

What may occur dermatologically due to thrombocytopenia?
A
Bruising
