Painless haematuria
What is the major workplace risk factor?
What is the major lifestyle factor?
Factories involved with industrial dyes, leather, cars or blacksmiths
Smoking - v. highly linked with transitional cell carcinoma
How is it diagnosed?
Via biopsy and cytoscopy
On presentation are the majority invading the bladder wall or not?
Not
How are not-muscle invading cancers dealt with compared to those who have invaded the muscle wall?
Not invaded
- TURBT = transurethral resection of the bladder tumour
+ chemo directly into bladder post surgery
Invaded
- radial cystectomy + ileal conduit with stoma
- chemo/radio therapy likely needed
What is the prognosis of bladder cancer?
Good 5 year prognosis rate
Infection with what parasite can cause metaplasia and eventually squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder?
Schistosmiasis
If patient presents with frank haematuria and a history of smoking what would you do next?
Cytoscopy - highly likely to be bladder cancer
