Why was Rakosi disliked?
He had blood purges with the AVH where 2000 were killed.
He had 200,000 political prisoners and religion was banned in schools.
A Five Year Plan made the Hungarians produce iron ore and coking coal which they could not afford to produce.
Unfair trades with Moscow.
What caused the uprising?
On October 23rd, 1956, students held demonstrations in Budapest. They demanded free elections, free speech, for Hungary to be a neutral state, to release political prisoners etc.
What happened on October 25th?
Tanks and troops were sent and 12 were killed when tanks opened fire.
What reforms did Nagy introduce from the 26th?
Free speech, freedom of religion, talks with the UN, introducing banned political parties, and announcing a coalition on November 3rd.
What happened on November 4th?
Krushchev sent in 200,000 Soviet troops and regained control with the tanks. Janos Kadar regained control and Nagy was killed in Romania, 1958. This set an example to other countries. The USA, at Suez, could not intervene.
