How did Romania leave?
On 16th December, there were demonstations. (1989)
21st December - Ceausescu booed by rebels in Bucharest.
22-24 December - Army rebels against secret police.
25 December - Ceausescu and his wife shot.

How did Hungary leave?
In 1988 Gorbachev accepted Hungary as a multi-party state.
In 1990, the Democratic Forum won.
How did Poland leave?
In 1988 there were strikes, and by 1989 Solidarity won and Mazoweicki became the first prime minister.
How did Bulgaria leave?
In 1990 the elections were won by a renamed Communist party.
How did Czechoslovakia leave?
17 Nov - demonstrations.
24 Nov 1989 - Communists resign.
9 Dec 1989 - Vaclav Hamel is the first non-Communist president since 1948.
1990 - Civic Forum wins.
How did East Germany win?
October 1989 - Gorbachev insists the USSR will not interfere with Germany leaving. Austria-Hungary border opens.
Nov 4th - demonstrations with 1 million.
Nov 9th - Border is opened and one million escaped per day.
3 Oct 1990 - Re-united.

What happened with the coup d’etat?
It was taken down by Boris Yeltsin of the Russian Socialist Republic in August 1991. Gorbachev was massively opposed in Eastern Europe and by December 1991 he resigned. In 1990 he had won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Which countries formed from the USSR’s collapse?
