What was the Warsaw Pact?
This was set up in 1955 as retaliation to NATO who were seen as an ‘aggressive alliance,’ - a military alliance of 8 nations headed by the Soviet Union promised to support one another if a nation was attacked. The organisation was in joint command under a supreme commander.
What developments did this lead to?
1949 - Mao Zedong and Communist Party took control of China.
1950-55 Korean War - the North Korean Party fought against the US supported Democratic Party in the South, invading in 1950 to confirm fear of the domino theory.
Hysteria of communism - Joe McCarthy, senator, accused high workers of being communists and spies and government employees were found guilty of exchanging nuclear secrets.
1949 - Soviet Union’s first atomic bomb.
When was NATO formed? What was it ?
NATO was formed in 1949 to defend nations threatened by the Soviet Union, in particular Western Europe countries who were no match for Soviet expansion. All would defend armed attacks.
