Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty - only two ballistic missile site allowed with 100 missiles at each.
Interim Agreement on Offensive Arms - a 5 year freeze on ICBM and SLBM launchers.
Strategic bombers and bombs not limited.
Satellites allowed to ensure both states followed agreements.
No restrictions on MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry vehicles).
How did tensions increase in October 1973?
At the Yom Kippur War the Israelites were attacked by Syrians and Egyptians armed by the USSR. Nixon supplied them with replacement equipment.
Brezhnev demanded a USA-Soviet force to protect Egypt from Israel attacks, causing military tension to increase in the US. Nixon proposed instead a UN peacekeeping force of neutral countries to intervene and the war ended on 24 Oct 1973.
What decisions were made at the Moscow meeting in July 1974?
Remove the danger of war.
Remove strategic warheads - missiles ready to go - to eventually achieve disarmament.
Eliminate sources of tensions and military conflict.
Achieve cooperation in economic, social, cultural, scientific, commercial, and technical fields to promote understanding.
What was the result of the Moscow meeting in 1974?
A space hand Shake between three US astronauts and two USSR cosmonauts as a symbol of improving relations.
What was agreed at the Helsinki agreements in 1975?
Security - USSR had to accept existence of borders such as West Germany.
Co-operation - more social, scientific, economic, and cultural links for political agreement.
Human rights - the Soviets had to respect freedom of speech, religion, and freedom from unfair arrest.
These were the three baskets. 33 nations with US and USSR involved.
What did Carter do that increase tension?
He sent a letter to a soviet dissident causing Brezhnev to complain of the violation of privacy in soviet affairs. Helsinki groups and human rights organisations complained of violation of human rights in the Soviet Union.
What agreements were made at SALT II (July 1979)?
- SLBMs (submarine launched ballistic missiles) and ICBMs delivered limited to 2400.
1320 limit on MIRVS (Multiple Independently Targeted Re-entry Vehicles) - collection of weapons carried on ICBMs.
A ban on construction of ICBM launchers.
A limit on deployment of strategic offensive arms.
This would last until 1985.

NATO had set up long range missiles in Europe.
