What was ‘Gold Mountain’?
California was considered the first ‘Gold Mountain’ and Australia was considered the second
Why did the Chinese travel from China to Australia in the 1850’s?
Because of the Gold Rush that had occurred over Australia, also known as ‘New Gold Mountain’
How was Gold mined in the 1850s?
Gold was mined through panning, mining and digging. The Chinese often had to pay to for tailings (land that had been already used by Europeans)
How were Chinese gold miners treated differently to non-Chinese gold miners?
The Chinese were looked down upon. There were many violent protests againstq them. The Europeans were treated normally and often inflicted the harm to the Chinese. They brought vegetables and animals, they had to pay extra taxes and were had no protection form the law
How did the Chinese miners differ from non-Chinese miners?
The Chinese were different in their appearance, dress, language, religion and customs. They were happy to work on Sundays, they had opium and were used to working long hours for little reward.
How did the Chinese miners attempt to fit in with the non-Chinese miners?
If the Chinese left their camps or did anything in the eyes of Europeans they had to dress and act like a non-Chinese so not to offend the others
Why were the Chinese miners unpopular?
Because they were different and were a threat. Although the Chinese wished to go home after they had found gold the Europeans thought they would stay and take their jobs from the, with their cheap labour and hard work. They felt threatend.
