Human Geography fieldwork - Stratford Flashcards
KEY QUESTION IS /HYPOTHSIS
-the regeneration of Stratford has had a positive impct on the area .
How does it link to what I have studied ?
-Urban regeneration .
-East Village , is an example of sustainbale living .
One risk that may happen during trip GETTING LOST 4/10
-how to reduce the risk ; stay in groups provided with an emergy phone number .
Another risk that may happen during the trip CROSSING ROAD 6/10
how to reduce the risk ; look carefully , waiting for all your groups to cross together .
Final risk tht may happen durin the trip ; BEING INJUREDD AND TRIPPING 6/10
How to reduce the risk ; pay attention when tripping , to avoid bruises and graes .
Describe the Characterstc features of yur study area (3marks )
-Olympic Stadium
-East village
-Stratford station
-Westfield shopping center .
Explain the advantages of your chosen locationf or our field enquiry (4marks )
-Relatively close to us (4o minutes by train )
-Shows different locations within one area .
-Already studied in ubran challenges ..
-Large scale ubran area with opportunities to collect data .
Desciption of fieldwork rtechinque EQU ENVIRONEMNTAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT
-We used a scale of 1-5 , 5 being very high qualiy and 1 being very poor .
-The qualitiies being assesed were split into four sections - Building traffic , openspace /reading and general quality .
-This was done for all four sites and the total score was added up .
Justifaction of Environemntl quality assesment
-If it ha a high environmental quality score , the regeneration had a positive impact .
-If it has a low environemntal score , it means the regenraition has had a negaitve impact on the area .
-This also allows us to rank each area from positive to negative
Description of field work technique - PEDESTRIAN COUNT
-in each site , we counteed the pedestrins in oth directions and recorded it s a tally under three age groups .
-Under 18 , adults and over 5 . WE DID THE TEST FOR FIVE MINTUES .
Justifcaiton of method for Pedestrian count
-If something is successful , it should be acessible for all , so it should be an area ith ah igh score for all age groups . -By doing a tota pedestrain count ,we can suggest it is a popular area . Legacy is still being carried on . Different directions help us see what areas are being used more .
Description of method ; Noise survey
-Use an app , which can measure the sound ,. Then we record the average decibel reding .
Justification of method ;l NOISE SURVEY
-Quiet decibel reading , much more peaceful and tranquil .
-hwoever , some many itnerpet as a bad thing as it mwans its not popular .
-Some may sy loud ecibel reding , means its popular , the area is being used well , others might mean its too loud and it might be negative , this method is based on person to person .
ENVIROENMTAL QUALITYA SSESSMENT ; NAME AND DESCRIPTION OF DATA PRESENTATION METHOD .
radar graph ; we divided the qua categories into 4 graphs , then plotted the 1-5 scale on each spoke , differnt colours for each site and joined the dots up .
-The smaller the shape , lower the EQA score .
-Bigger the shpe , higher thre EQUA SOCPRE
Justifcation of radar graph for equa data presentation method
-We could ocmpare each ‘diamond’ shape , tos ee what ere the stronges facilities on each sie - compare ro any tohr . Hard to o 17 spokes ut inaccuracy we can average it ,. Positive lagre small poor .
data pesentation method for pedestrain count
-We did proportioal ares one towrds the site and one awy . The width of the area describes the number of people .
-On mys clae , 1 person = 0.5 .
-I also split mya rrow into sections and colour coded each section absed on each age group .
Justifaction of data presnettion pedestrian count .
-sEEING THE DIRECTIONS TOWARDS ND WY , WE SAW HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE ATTRACTED to ech area and to see if it had a positiv effect compared to other areas .
-We could see if the site was popular or not .
-However , we did go onto the schoolt rip on in janurary during owrk schoolhrs so it isn;t representtive data .
description of data pedestrain method - nosie survey
-Locatd sites on our map .I took the decibel reading equaling pie r squared divided b pie and square rooted to find radius for ech circle .
-Proportional circles .
Justificaiton of data presentation for nosie survey
-At a glance , we cna see what ares are thelargest areas .
-WE CAN ALSO see wht reas are the busiest and had the best impact on Stratford .
Alternative ways to present the data
-EQA - bipolargraph .
-Pedestrian count - Isoline Map , Choloropleth map .
-Noise survey - pictogram ; isoline map
What other data could I present and how could I present it
-Sustainiaility score -ar graph
-DField sketch - neat ersion +annotated .
-Questionnaire - pie chart , class average by collecting all scores .
What do my results show ? EQA
-Highest 69/85
Lowest westfield shopping center - 45/85
Average 58.25/85
EXPLANATION OF RESULTS ;
-Olympic stadium gets the highest score , because it was well maintained , lots of new buildings were being built –> belonging to offices , which is whit should be mintained .
What do results hsow Pedestrain count
-Highest 112 - outside westifeld shopping center .
-Lowest - 45/85
Average 69
-Busiest area in the fieldtripw as outside WESTIFELD ,
-If it busy it man sit had a positice effect of regeneration .
-This is because a popular place suggsts its accesible for all ae groups .
-The lwoest Olmpic stadium park - is also jsutifiable as it is is meant to be a tranquila rea of r leisure .
-The average is high overall so generlly had a positive effect .
What to do my nosie survey results show ?
-Highest 70DB
-Lowest 54DM
AVERAGE 61.75DB
-Outside Westfield shopping center had the highest db refing , suggesting the regenration had a positive effect becasue everyone isa cessomg the shops and the transport .
-East Village had the lowest db reading , this coul dbe because we had visited during school work hoursi n janurary therefore a low reaing .
-Th averag eis very hih so if there is Legw noise - busy - it mans it was a positive efct .
Waht are the links and anomlaies between my data sets?
LINK- the area that was the NOSIEST had the highest pedestrian count (outside Westield shopping center . ANOMALY - however , it dosen’t link with with the EQUA as outside westfield had the lowest score .
-ANOMLAY - EQUA highst was in the olmpic park -but it had the loes tnoise survey (54DB reading) suggest tranuqil setting .
EQUA limitiations iwth data colleciton method ? was it reliable
-subjective on our opiniosn baias .
-Only looked at four selected locations .
-We wer only at each oction ofr half an hr and we are not poreffsional town planner .
EQA - improvements in data collection methods .
-Collate the data of the class and find an averag ..
-Asks locals to score as they have more area experience .
EQA - problem with results , are they accurate?
-They are accurate in the sense they give our opinion , ut if we spent MORE ,t ime it culd be more accurate .
EQA - HOW DO THE PORBLEMS IWTH MYMETHODS AND RESULTS AFFECT MY CONLUSIONS ?
-Since our results re biased , theya ren;t accurate , befroe mt results would be ads reliable as theya re different to tohers .
EQA - How would the improvements to my methods improve my results and conclusions
-By doing anaverage score (class average) our opinions will reflect more valid data .
Pedestrian count - limitations with data collection method . Was it reliable ?
-We onlyc ollected people inone dy.
-Chance of miscountring possile , especially if there is too many people .
Pedestrian count - improvements to data collection method
-Focus on smaller reas to surbey .
-Count at different times , seasons ,a nd repeat counts with other people .
-Take an average for the dates .
EQA - problem with results ,a re they accurate ?
-Not accurate as we counted incorrectly due to too many people .
Pedestrian count - how do the porblems with my methods and results affect my conclusions .
-Since our results re inacurrate ,they re les reliable as theyd ont marchothers so our conclusion woudl be less valid .
How would the improvements ot my methods improve my results and conclusions .
Average = unbiased=valid conclusoins .
Noise surve- limitations with data collection method - was it reliable?
-Noise from traffic amde results inaccurate .
-Redings onlyt aken once .
-Noise dosen;t alays mean popular .
Noise survey - imporvements to data collection mehod ;
-repeat many times .
-Rpeeat at different times .
-Do it at more loccations
-GTake an average with the class .
Nosie survey ; problem with the results . re they accurate
-Traffic is disrupted soudns ( and consturction) , amking results less accurat .
Noise survey ; hwod o the prolems with my methods and result affect my conclusion ?
-Results are less acurrate so less reliable so conclusions don; match others .
Noise survey - How would the improovments to my methods improve myr esults and conclusion ?
-Averhe = unbiased - valic conclusions .
Overall , are my conclusions reliable ?
-I mostlya gree that my conlusions are reliable ,as m ost of myd ata was accurate depsite some anomalies . Like the msot popular area (Westfield) , had the lwoesr EQUA score .
-But overal my conclusiosn were quier reliable , my other dar ws also reliable .
What is my overal conclusion
-I moslty agree iwth the hypothesis a lot of my daa supports the positive effect of Stratford regeneration .
-For example , my average EQUA , score was around68 % , alluding to a highl positive effect , which is reflected in the more maintianed areas like Westfield shoppign enter and Easst Village .
-Howver , my lwoest EQUA score was outside westfield , sugeditng tht the regenrayion didn’t encedssarilybenefit all of stratord enviornemtnll , this is because of bad trfic , builidngs and lc of green space .
-Despite this , there was a high pedestrain count outside westfield (112) , showing how popular thea rea is , with the highest decibel reading at(70DB) , which cn be interpetes as busya nd lots of tranpsort aailble .
EVALUATION OF FIELDWORK - what additional data would help with my enquiry ?
-COmparing old and new mpas .
-Annotated ifeld sketch .
-Interview ith someone part of the legacy comitte .
-QUALTY OF life SURVEY .
EVALUATION OF FIELDWORK - can you suggest further lines of enquiry ?
-How has the Olympcis left behind a good legacy ?
-Is ther enough employment /houses for locals ?
-Is this regenrtion benefitting older areas of Stratford ?
EXm - STATE THE TITLE OF YOUR FIELDWORK ENQUIRY
EXPLAIN WHYIT WAS A SUITABLE TOPIC FOR A GEORHAPHUCAL ENQUIRY .
