coast part 2 Flashcards
What is a UK coastal management scheme ?
- In Medmerry in West Sussex .
- It is the largest managed coastal realignment scheme in Europe .
Why was the scheme needed ?
- The Environment agency EA , considered the eara to the West of Sussex to mbe the most risk of flooding due to climate range .
- The only protection there was a shingle ridge from the 1900s break reprofiling , took place yearly annual cost 200k .
- this was unsutainale - breached 340 properties with holidya homes .
What was one strategy used at Medmerry
- Builidng a new embankement up two 2kilometres inland form shore using clay .
- eMBANKEMNT ENCLOSED FUTHER INTERTIDAL AREA PROTECTING BEHIND .
What was the second strategy used at Medmerry ?
-Behind embankment , channel was built to collect drainig water , four outfall strcutres built to take water to intertidal area .
What was the third strategy used at Medmerry ?
-Rock armour placed on seward edges , , 60k tonnes of hardrock from orway .
What is final strategy used at medmerry
-once embankent and rockarmour in place , a 110 m breach as made in the shingle bank allowing sea to flood ,c reating new intertiday area .
What are two positive social effects as result of strategy ?
- Selsey has now a 1 in 1000 chnace of coastal flooding bes level portection in Uk .
- A mainetnecance acess track behind emanment provides a cycle route and footpath , whereas before thyeo nlyhad two small footpaths .
What are two positive economic effects as a result of the strategy ?
-Tourism , a main contributor to local economy sid to increase , two new car porks and four viewing points easy acess .
-Increase in people in holidly villages - gain reputation ,
with bird watchers interested in natrue .
- newly flooded area expected rto become fishing nursery , boosting fishing indusry in selsey , sal mash vegeation can be used for cattle farming as well ad production of expensive salt marsh beef .
What are two positive environmental effects as a result of the strategy ?
- Carrying out detailed environental assesment prior to flooding , can protect existing species like badgers and newts .
- 300 hectares of new intertidal habitats are forming seward fo the embankment , Mudflats saltmarshed atrrcting ducks .
Two negative impacts of the strategy social .
- Local feel that EA shouldnt have gievn up on land so esily , looked into more options liek offshore reefs or continued each relaignment .
- Some opponents of the shcme came from outisde area , dindt like the fac they wre spending on money on sprsely popuate area , could put money into better things .
Two negative econmoic impact of strategy .
-28 mil shcme expensive
used only cost 0.2m for shingle wall so can it be jusified .
-for realignment scheme , farms grwoing oil seed rape and winter wheat had to be abandoed , loosing good agricultural land was regarded as being wasteful , wuestioning EU pritoising builidngs over agriculutre .
environtmental negative impact of strategy ?
-Despite planning habitats of existing species such as badgers would hae been distrubed .
What is chemical weathering ?
-In chemical weathering, the chemical composition of rock changes.
give another example of chemical weathering
Hydrolisis , when acidic rainwater breaks down the roc causing it to rot .
Give the final example of chemical weaheirng .
Oxidation , when rocks are broken down by oxygen and water .
