Human Digestive System Flashcards
Mouth
Mechanically breaks down the Food and mixes it with Saliva.
Salivary Glands
Produces an enzyme called Amylase.
Oesophagus
Transport food to stomach
Stomach
Churns the food and mixes it with hydrochloric acid.
Produces a digestive enzymes called Protease.
Small intestine
Continues to digest the food and absorbs the small soluble molecules
Features of the Small Intestine
They had a very large surface area due villi (folds in the surface of the small intestine) and microvilli (folds on the surface fold of the villi.)
The small intestines have a good supply as there are lots of capillaries supplying the villi, ensuring the any food molecules absorbed are taken to other tissues.
Large Intestine
Where water is absorbed.
Rectum
Where faeces are stored.
Pancreas
Creates all three enzymes.
Liver
Produces bile which speeds up enzyme reaction
