Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration, going down the concentration gradient.
It is a passive transport which means that it does not require energy to do.
It occurs in liquids and gasses.
What factors affect Diffusion?
High Temperature means that the particles have more energy, which therefore means that they are able to move more quickly, speeding the rate of diffusion.
Larger Surface Area means that there is a bigger area for diffusion to take place.
The greater the difference in concentration, the faster diffusion will occur.
What it Osmosis?
The diffusion of water molecules from a higher concentration of water (dilute) region to a low concentrated region through a partially permeable membrane.
It is a passive process as energy is not required.
Hypotonic
When the solution is more dilute than the cells internal environment, which causes the cell to burst.
Isotonic
When the solution has the same concentration as the cells internal environment, which then means there is no net movement of water molecules causing the cell to be unaffected.
Hypertonic
When the solution is more concentrated than the cells internal environment, which causes the cell to shrink.
What is Active Transport?
The process of transporting a substance from a more dilute(low concentration) region to a more concentrated (high concentration) region, which goes against the concentration gradient, across a partially permeable membrane.
It is an active process as it requires energy from respiration to carry out.
