Enzymes Lock and Key Flashcards
Enzymes
They are proteins that function as a biological catalyst, so they are molecules which speed up a reaction without being chemically used up.
Factors affecting enzyme rate: Temperature
Increasing temperature results in a faster reaction as there are more successful collision.
At the optimum, the enzymes are working at its best efficiency.
However, any higher than that and then enzyme activity will decrease as the enzyme had been denatured (changed so that the enzyme no longer fits into their active site.)
Substrate Concentration
As it increases ,the rate also increases but does no last forever as the enzymes have become saturated and no more substrate can fit so no more reactions
Changing the PH
Too above or too low the optimum PH can denature the enzyme.
