Cell Division: Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is Mitosis?
A
A type of cell division in which a diploid (contains two complete set of chromosomes) copies itself and finally divides itself into two identical diploid daughter cells
2
Q
- Interphase
A
The longest stage of Mitosis:
- When the cell grows and increases the number of sub-cellular structures.
- DNA replicates to create two copies of each chromosome.
3
Q
- Prophase
A
- DNA in chromosome and their copies condense
4
Q
- Metaphase
A
- Chromosomes line up in the middle
5
Q
- Anaphase
A
- Chromosomes pulled apart to different ends of the cell
6
Q
- Telophase
A
- New membranes form around the chromosome at each end of the cell.
7
Q
- Cytokinesis
A
- Division of two daughter cells
8
Q
When does a cell need mitosis?
A
- When the organism grows
- When the organism becomes damaged and needs to be repaired.
- An organism like bacteria needs mitosis to produce asexually.
