Age, DM, and CKD

For general population, non-black individual, Rx?
- start with HCTZ OR: ACEi, ARB, CCB
For general population, black individual, Rx?
- start with HCTZ
- CCB is alternative, but no ACEi, or ARB
How is a DM patient complicated the RX choice for HTN?
If no CKD - management goal 140/90 for all ages, treatment strategy the same (black and non-black)
How is a CKD patient with or without DM complicated Rx choice for HTN
- Treatment goal 140/90
- Starting therapy is ACEi or ARB
How to Dx of HTN
If clinical BP > 140/90, measure again twice during patient’s waking hours
If home measurement, take average of 14 measurements
