HT Particle Model Of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Matter is made of particles.
Energy
Has no mass
Doesn’t take up space
Energy has the ability to move particles or do work
Particle model of matter
- All substances are made of particles that are too small to be seen
- The particles are always in motion (kinetic energy)
- The particles have spaces between them
- The motion of particles increases as temp Increases and decreases as temp decreases
Characteristics of a solid
Particles are:
Packed closely together Barely moving (vibrating) Have a definite volume and shape
When heated the particles will take in more energy pushing in each other until they form a liquid
Characteristics of a liquid
Particles are:
Loosely arranged (bigger spaces) In constant motion Have a definite volume Have no definite shape (take the shape of a container)
When heated the particles will take in more energy pushing on each other until they form a gas
Characteristics of gas
Particles are:
Floating freely (big spaces) In constant motion No definite volume (can be compressed) No definite shape (fills the container)
These particles have the MOST energy from heat that they can take in
Evaporation
Liquid to gas
Condensation
Gas to liquid
Melting
Solid to liquid
Freezing
Liquid to solid
Sublimation
Solid to gas
Deposition
Gas to solid
What happens when energy is added to molecules
Increase their motion
Move further and further apart
What happens when energy is removed from the molecules
Decrease their motion
Move closer together
