1.3 Adaptations Flashcards
Adaptation
It is inherited characteristics that help an organism to survive and reproduce in it’s environment.
Behavioural adaptations
It is something an animal does to survive in it’s environment.
Structural adaptations
It is a specific structure that helps an organism survive it’s environment.
Bioluminescence
A biochemical emission of light from a living organism.
Mimicry
The action or skill of imitating someone or something.
Give me an example of behavioural adaptations
Hibernation migration or instincts
Birds flying south in the winter, bears hibernating in the winter.
Give me an example of structural adaptations
Giraffe’s long neck to help reach food that they need.
Snake’s fangs are hollow so that the venom can go through the fangs into what was bitten.
Beaver’s clear eyelid to help it see underwater.
Give me an example of an animal with bioluminescence
Angler fish
Most are in the deep sea
Give me an example of an animal with mimicry
Moth
Most are above the sea
Give me an example of a plant adaptation
Spines for leaves to prevent an animal from eating it.
Roots above the surface to obtain water before it reaches other organisms underground.
Give an example of how an organism uses a behavioural adaptation and a structural adaptation
Structural adaptation: A hare’s long ears being able to hear the slightest noises like an animal coming to attack it.
Behavioural adaptation: A bird building it’s nest is an instinct.
Explain the difference between structural and behavioural adaptations
A structural adaptation is a specific part of the body that they were born with helping them survive but behavioural adaptations are something it learns or is an instinct to help it survive.
What do adaptations help with?
They help an animal survive and find its 4 basic needs.
