Forces Flashcards
Mass
The measure of how much atoms is in an object
Mass is the same on earth or another planet
Mass only changes if matter is added or removed from the structure
How do you measure mass
Using a balance scale
Forces
A push or pull
Measure in units called newtons (N)
Always has a direction and size
How do we measure force
With a force meter or a spring scale
Weight
Is a force - the force of gravity
Measured in newtons (N)
Gravity
The force of attraction between any two objects
Depends on the mass of the objects and the distance between them
Earth has enough mass that it attracts all nearby objects
Describe gravity attraction
Gravity attracts all objects towards one another
If mass increases force also increases
If distance increases force decreases
How does weight change
It depends on gravity
The farther you are from the Center of earth the lower the force of gravity or the lower your weight
How do you calculate weight
By multiplying it’s mass in kg by 10 to get it in N
What are the 2 types of forces
External and internal forces
What are the types of external forces
Dead load and live load
What are the types of internal forces
Tension
Compression
Shear
Torsion
Dead load
The weight of a structure upon itself. It can cause Sag Tilt Pull apart the ground Compresses under the load
Live load
The force/forces that act on/in a structure. It is changing or non-permanent structures are designed to withhold 3 times these forces These forces include: People Rain Furniture Wind Snow
Tension
Stretch a material by pulling its ends apart
