2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 And 2.5 Flashcards
Biotic examples
A living part of an ecosystem. Examples: ant, deer, etc.
Abiotic examples
Non-living parts of an ecosystem.Includes dead things. Examples: rocks, sun, dead deer ,etc.
True or false: Biotic parts don’t interact with abiotic parts.
False.
Niche
An organisms role in its ecosystem. An organism can have more than one niche. Where it lives and what it eats.
Producers
An organism that makes food for itself using photosynthesis. Usually it is a plant.
Consumers
All other organism except for plants. They eat producers and may eat consumers.
Herbivore
They eat only producers.
Carnivores
They eat only other consumers.
Omnivores
They eat producers and consumers.
Give me an example of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
Herbivore: horse, giraffe, etc.
Carnivores: lion, wolf, etc.
Omnivores: pigs, bears, humans, etc.
Predator, predation, examples
Consumers that eat other animals. Predation is the preying of one animal on others. Example: lynx, killer whale, etc.
Prey examples
They are eaten by a predator. Examples: lizards, hares, etc.
Scavengers examples
Feed on dead or decaying plants or animal matter. Examples: hyenas, etc.
Decomposer examples
Organism that break down dead or decaying organisms, they convert waste into nutrients for plants. Examples: worms, fungi , mushrooms, etc.
Tell me about the food pyramid
Bottom to top: Producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers and quaternary consumers.
Food chain
A model that shows how energy stored in food passes from organism or organism.(simple)
Give me an example of a food chain.
Always starts with sun. Sun, grass, mouse, snake and hawk.
Energy flow
The movement of energy starting from the sun and passing one organism to the next.
Food web
A network of interconnected food chains. (Complex)
Water cycle
Describes the existence and movement of water on, in and above the earth.
Evaporation
Liquid water that turns into a gas and rises into the air.
Transpiration
It also adds water vapour to the air.
Condensation
The process of water vapour in the air changed into liquid water. Formation of clouds.
Precipitation
The fall of water, ice or snow.
Run off
Precipitation that didn’t get absorbed into the soil or didn’t evaporate makes it’s way from the ground into places that water collect.
Carbon cycle
The circulation of carbon from the atmosphere into organism back again.
Sources of carbon
- Respiration of animals
- Factories and auto emissions
- Decaying/dead organisms
Absorption of carbon
- Photosynthesis
- Fossil fuel production
- Stored in rock
Pollution cycle
Pollution is anything that causes harm to a living thing or environment. Pollutants move through water and air.
Give me examples of types of pollution
Air, water, soil, noise, etc.
Bioaccumulation
The build-up of pollutants/toxins in the tissues of a living thing.
Biomagnification
The concentration of how much pollutants/toxins there are through the food chain.
