1.1 and 1.2 Interactions and ecosystems Flashcards
Interaction
An action that occurs as two or more living or non living things have an effect upon one another.
Ecosystem
Describes the interactions of a specific group of living and non living things.
What are the four basic needs all living things need?
Energy, water, habitat and gas exchange
What is energy?
Energy is usually some type of food.
What is water?
How much water does this thing need.
What is habitat?
Where does this thing live, in what conditions.
What is gas exchange?
It is what this thing uses to breathe.
Symbiosis
It is the long-term living together of unlike organisms. A close long-term relationship between two different organisms.
What are the three different types of symbiosis?
Parasitism, Mutualism and Commensalism
Parasitism
Involves a parasite living off energy supplied by a host.
Benefit-harm relationship
Mutualism
Involves two organisms both benefiting from the relationship.
Commensalism
A relationship between two organisms where one organism benefits and one organism is unaffected.
Competition
Two organisms share a food source or habitat. Sometimes one organism is harmed and the other benefits or both are harmed.
Explain the difference between symbiosis and competition
The difference is that symbiosis is a long-term relationship of two unlike organisms but competition is basically fighting and it will be benefit-harm or lose-lose.
Give an example of each type of symbiosis and name them
Parasitism: A mosquito taking blood from me.
Mutualism: A bird cleaning an alligators teeth.
Commensalism: A small fish taking a ride on a shark or a bigger fish.
