The cultural factor of consumerism
The political philosophy of secularism
The people that inspire , motivate , and direct family ubringing
What is a social factor
Social factors are the ways that people and groups relate to each other in society
Social factors
These factors affect
and in turn
human behaviour influence peoples lives
Explain how political philosophies could impact people’s interaction with religion
Political philosophies like communism and liberalism will greatly affect a person’s ability to interact with a religion. On one hand in a liberal democracy individuals are free to practice and follow any religion they would like without the fear of persecution. But in communist societies people are pressured and threatened not to follow many religions just ones maybe supported by the government.
What is a religion
A religion is a particular system of beliefs , values , rituals and worship shared by a number of people
Religions have
ethical
ethical codes and communal practices
Interactions with religion
Each religion offers a way of life that seeks to
provide people with meaning and purpose in life

Interactions with religion
A variety of factors influence how a person throughout life interacts with religion . Such factors include
experiences with family , the context of a person’s life
Worldview
What is the definition of worldview

assumptions about life and belief
Worldview

how an individual lives
How do experiences in a family as a child could both facilitate and hinder how a person interacts with religion
Experiences in a family as a child with religion can be positive and negative. A child who was brought up in a religious family who undertook many religious experiences like prayer, going to mass regularly attending a Catholic school will most probably see religion in a positive light.
Children brought up in an athesitic family or the opposite will most likely see religion in a more negative light
Political factor of communism
The Chinese government places restrictions on
Buddhism in Tibet
Political factor of communism
Strict controls on the practice
of
religion among Uighur muslims and on religious groups that are not registered by the government
Poltical factor of communism
Numerous cases of
imprisonment , beatings and torture of members of these religious groups by Chinese authorities
Family ubringing
A warm
affirming
relationship pattern was most likely to result in the successful transmission of religion.
Family ubringing
Children responded best to parents who were
unconditionally supportive and did not force their beliefs or practices onto their children
Family ubringing
A consistently
close
relationship with parents creates continuity in their faith across generations
Family ubringing
By contrast the three other parenting styles appeared to
decrease the likelihood of religious transmission
Family ubringing
What is socialisation
Socialisation is the process , beginning during childhood , by which individuals acquire the values , habits and attitudes through social experiences
Family ubringing
Teenagers with seriously religious parents are likely to have been trained
in their lives to think , feel , believe and act as serious religious believers.
Family ubringing
This training of teenagers by their parents
“sticks” with them even when they leave home and enter emerging adulthood
Family ubringing
These teenagers have internalized
their parent’s religious worldviews
Family ubringing
Of parents who report that their faith is extremely important in their daily lives
67% of teens report a similar opinion
Family ubringing
The single most important social influence on the religious and spiritual lives of adolescents is their

Secularism
What is it ?
over another
commitment
Secularism entails a commitment to neutrality on behalf of the state towards religion
Secularism
The government should neither
favour , disfavour , promote nor discourage any particular religious belief and viewpoint over another
Secularism
Typically understood as meaning a commitment to
upholding seperation of the church and state
Secularism
Government should not
discriminate nor typically have a state religion
Secularism
The secular system of government in these countries proposes that people should be
free to choose whatever religion thet want to adhere to or choose to have no religion
Secularism
Soft secularism What is it ?
Soft secularism asserts the right to be free from religious rule and the right to freedom from governmental imposition of religion upon the people.
Soft secularism
However soft secular systems of governance allow
the involvement of religions in service
Soft secularism
For example religious schools and hospitals in Australia
are partially funded by the state
Hard secularism
Definition
Hard secularism can be defined as that the state should have no formal interaction with religions. Religions should be excluded from all political matters and from aiding government services e.g. schools
Hard secularism
Religion can still be
freely practiced
Secularism in Australia
4 things the Australian government is prohibited from doing in relation to religion
- Prohibited from making laws for establishing a state religion
- prohibited from imposing any religious observance
- prohibited from making laws against the free exercise of any religion
- prohibited from imposing any religious test to qualify for a public office
Secularism in France
Define what is meant by the French term “Laicite”
Understood as a formal seperation of the state from Church. It involves the complete removal of religious values from the public sphere and their replacement with secular values such as liberty , equality , and fraternity
Secularism in France
French state employees are prohibited from showing
any religious symbols or garments
Secularism in france
Explain the idea that hard secularism restricts people’s religious freedom
a law passed
a law passed in March 2004 “prohibits all clothing displaying religious worship” to be worn in schools reffered to as the headscarf ban
This particulary targets muslim people restricting them from wearing their headscarfs which is imperative to their religion.
Secularism’s impact upon people’s interaction with religion
How does secularism support people’s interaction with religion
Secularism provides people with the freedom to practice religion , and promote religious ideas. In Australia people can change religion or choose to follow none.
Secularism’s impact upon people’s interaction with religion
Religious institutions such as
schools are financially supported by the government , having a greater presence in society then if all the funding was only financed by religions.
Secularism’s impact upon people’s interaction with religion
Some schools would not
be able to exist without the high level of government funding
Secularism’s impact upon people’s interaction with religion
Around
what percent of school aged children
20% of school aged children attend religious schools and would probably not have the experience of relgiion otherwise.
Secularism can hinder people’s interaction with religion
Due to the toleration
it provides for ideas that are antithetical to religion
Secularism can hinder people’s interaction with religion
Ideologies such as
atheism , consumerism , individualism are promoted in Australian soceity
Secularism can hinder people’s interaction with religion
These ideas are
opposed to the teachings of the Catholic Church
Secularism can hinder people’s interaction with religion
Hard secularists believe that religions should
not contribute to public discussions and have no influence on debates or government policy.
Secularism can hinder people’s interaction with religion
The French policy of Laicite supports that religion
should be practiced in secret by believers with no form of worship to be shown in public.
The cultural factor of consumerism
Define the cultural factor of consumerism
Consumerism can be defined as an economic and social ideology and order that encourages consumption or acquisition of goods and services in a never ending cycle
The cultural factor of consumerism
3 disadvantages of consumerism
- Wasteful: People are buying new verisions of the same things repeatedly creating an abundance of weight
- Creates class barriers: creating a divide between those who can afford nice things and those who cannot
- Negative impact on the environment: natural resources affected due to overproduction. Pollution produced.
The cultural factor of consumerism
3 advantages of consumerism
- Creates jobs: new product and service demands through consumerism requires more workers
- Ensures quality: companies will try and make high quality goods at lower prices to stay competitive
- Encourages innovations: if your company does well you will want to expand , expanding means innovation and funds to acheive new and bigger goals
How Consumerism hinders people’s interaction with religion
People are now more interested in religious
‘products’ and ‘techniques’ rather than pursuing the deeper meaning and truth of Christianity
How Consumerism hinders people’s interaction with religion
For example Christmas , Pope Francis critisizes
Christmas must not be reduced to a consumerist
(full of gifts and good wishes but poor in Christian faith and poor in humanity as well ) ,
How Consumerism hinders people’s interaction with religion
We are in great need of
tenderness , we are in great need of human touch. Pandemic has forced us to be more distant.
