Hormones Flashcards
Trophic Hormone
Hormones regulating hormones
ACTH
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) regulating adrenal cortex (cortisol activity)
CRH
Corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) regulates ACTH
ADH
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)/Vasopressin Water retention
Oxytocin (2)
- Milk let-down
2. Uterine contractions
TSH
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) regulates thyroid hormones in anterior pituitary
Aldosterone
Steroid hormone that regulates salt/water and effect on blood pressure
Calcitonin
Produced by c-cell in thyroid gland that regulates calcium/phosphate levels in the blood - opposing PTH
PTH
Increases calcium reabsorption
Erythropoietin
Produced by kidneys to increase RBC production
Gastrin
Secreted into the bloodstream to stimulate gastric juice in stomach
Glucagon
Stimulates gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis to produce glucose from glycogen in decreased glucose levels in liver
Insulin
Stimulates glucose uptake in liver as glycogen
Somatostatin
Peptide hormone in GI/nervous system that regulates the endocrine system (aka growth hormone-inhibiting hormone)
Leptin
Released from fat cells that stimulates energy homeostasis
Ghrelin
Secreted peptide hormone in stomach that stimulates appetite and growth hormone release
Renin
Secreted and stored int he kidneys which promotes the production of angiostensin
Releasing and Inhibiting Factors
Peptide hormones targeting the anterior pituitary hormone regulation
GH
Increase bone and muscle growth and cell turnover rate
Prolactin
Peptide hormone targeting mammary gland for milk production
