Q

Vasopressin (Pitressin):

  • Mechanism of action
A
  • Possesses pressor and anti-diuretic properties.
  • Increases nephron distal tube reabsorption of water.
  • High doses act as a non-adrenergic vasoconstrictor by stimulation of smooth muscle receptors.
  • Alt to epinephrine during CPR.

Q

Glucagon (GlucaGen):

  • Mechanism of Action:
A
  • A protein secreted by Alpha cells of the Islets of Langerhans.
  • Converts stored glycogen in the liver to glucose.
  • Inhibits the synthesis of glucose to glycogen.
  • Enhances conventional treatments for C+ blockers and Beta blockers OD by producing positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the heart by stimulating glucagon specific receptors in myocardium. These receptors are not even effected by massive amounts of beta blockers, there by reversing hypotension and bradycardia.
