Homeostatic Imbalance - Exam 2 Flashcards
» ADH (Anti Diuretic Hormone) deficiency due to hypothalamus or posterior pituitary damage
» Must keep well-hydrated
Diabetes Insipidus
» Retention of fluid, headache, disorientation
» Fluid restriction; blood sodium level monitoring
Syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH)
- In children results in gigantism
* In adults results in acromegaly
Hypersecretion of Growth Hormone
• In children results in pituitary dwarfism
Hyposecretion of Growth Hormone
causes inappropriate lactation, lack of menses, infertility in females, & impotence in males
Hyper Secretion of Prolactin
Adults: Myxedema = Low metabolism, lethargy, chills, constipation
» Goiter present: If due to lack of iodine
– Infants: Cretinism = Mental retardation and disproportioned body
Hyposecretion of Thyroid Hormone
– Graves disease
– Autoimmune - mimic TSH
– Symptoms = Increased metabolism, Irregular heartbeat, Weight loss and Exophthalmos
– Treatment: Surgery and Radioactive iodine
Hypersecretion of Thyroid Hormone
- Bones soften and deform
* Elevated Ca2+ depresses nervous system and contributes to formation of kidney stones
Hyperparathyroidism due to tumor
• Results in tetany, respiratory paralysis, and death
Hypoparathyroidism following gland trauma or removal or dietary magnesium deficiency
hypersecretion due to adrenal tumors
– Hypertension and edema due to excessive Na+
– Excretion of K+ leading to abnormal function of neurons and muscle
Aldosteronism
– Depresses cartilage and bone formation
– Inhibits inflammation
– Depresses immune system
– Disrupts cardiovascular, neural, & gastrointestinal function
Cushings Disease/Hypersecretion of glucocorticoids
Also involves deficits in mineralocorticoids
» Decrease in glucose and Na+ levels
» Weight loss, severe dehydration, and hypotension
Hyposecretion of Glucocorticoids—Addison’s disease
Hypersecretion of androgens
• Not noticeable in adult males
• Females and prepubertal males
– Boys – reproductive organs mature; secondary sex characteristics emerge early
– Females – beard, masculine pattern of body hair; clitoris resembles small penis
Adrenogenital syndrome (masculinization)
increased metabolic rate, rapid heartbeat and palpitations, hypertension, intense nervousness, sweating
Hyperglycemia - Hypersecretion of Epinephrine/norepinephrine
