homeostasis Flashcards
homeostasis
maintaining a constant internal environment
what is homeostasis controlled by?
hypothalmus
endotherms
generate their own heat through metabolic reactions maintain a constant body temp independent outside their enviroment e.g human
exotherms
gain or lose heat to environment, body temp changes with environmental temp e.g frog
what happens to the skin in hot conditions?
vasodilation
sweating
vasodilation
blood vessels in the skin dilate and move to the surface of the skin. losing heat
sweating
water on the surface of the skin evaporates taking heat with it - cools us down
what happens to the skin in cold conditions
vasoconstriction and piberection
vasoconstriction
blood vessels constrict and move from the surface of skin, reducing heat loss
piberection
erector muscles hair stands up, trapping a layer of air ( air is an insulator)
