HIV Flashcards
HIV stands for?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
What AIDS stand for?
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
T or F ?
All people with AIDS have HIV, but not all people with HIV
have AIDS.
T
Most common transmission of HIV?
Blood, Semen, Vaginal secretions, and breast milk
What’s the cell function?
the workshop for manufacturing proteins
What’s the role of DNA?
tells the cells how to assemble amino acids to form protein substances. DNA= cookbook
Steps on how HIV infects the body
- HIV enters body cells (T-cells), and manipulates DNA
- Infected cell (T-cells ) produce more HIV ( instead of proteins)
- Virus replicates rapidly
- Immune system recognizes cells (t-cells) are compromised and destroys them
Causes the immune system/ immunity host to be compromised leading to opportunistic infections
Role of T-Cells
directly killing infected host cells
activating other immune cells to fight
regulating the immune response
T-cells is also know as?
CD4 cells
How do we check the stages of HIV?
CD4 cells counts
Normal/expected range of CD4 cells of stage 1
> 500
Normal/expected range of CD4 cells of stage 2?
200-499
Normal/expected range of CD4 cells of stage 3? ( AIDS)
<200
Teaching will provide to prevent HIV infections?
Abstain from sexual intercourse - have monogamous sex
Avoid casual sex with multiple partners - uses condoms during sexual intercoarse
No needle shearing - Refrain from donating blood if engaged in high risk behaviors
What needed to test HIV?
Enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) x2
Western Blot test
Viral load testing
CD4 count
