histology stains Flashcards

1
Q

what is H&E stain used for?

A

for viewing cellular and tissue structure

hematoxylin is blue, BASIC dye –> stains ACIDS (like DNA, RNA, and RER) –> basophilic (blue/purple)

eosin is red-pink, ACIDIC dye –> stains BASES (like proteins and basic structures) –> eosinophilic/acidophilic (red-pink)

Q

what is gram stain used for?

A

differentiate different bacterial species, used to determine causative organism in a bacterial infection
involves use of crystal violet or methylene blue as PRIMARY color

gram-pos orgs retain primary color
gram-neg orgs do not take up primary stain and appear RED

Q

what is giemsa stain used for?

A

commonly used in HEMATOLOGY for its ability to stain bone marrow, plasma cells, and mast cells
also id blood parasites and help visualize chromosome abnormalities

alternating darker and lighter nucleotide portions

Q

what is periodic acid schiff reaction stain used for?

A

PAS stain
used to examine structures containing high amounts of carb molecules (like intestinal brush border, renal tubular cells, mucus, and reticular fibers of CT)

Q

what is nissl stain used for?

A

to study neuronal structure in BRAIN and SPINAL CORD
neuropil stians blueish purple and granular
nissl substance has high amount of rRNA, making the dye appear dark blue
