Histology of the eye Flashcards
What are the 4 histological layers of the eye?
Outer layer is continuous with the skin
obicuaris oculi muscle
Tarsal plate with stromal layer
Innermost palpebral conjunctiva layer
What makes up the outermost layer of the eye?
Haired keratinised stratified squamous
epithelium and tactile hairs
as well as sebaceous and sweat glands
What lines the innermost layer of the eyelid?
palpebral conjunctiva which is continuous with bulbar conjunctiva
What makes up the tarsal plate of the eyelid?
Plate of dense connective tissue between
dermis of skin and lamina propria of
conjunctiva
It contains modified sebacous glands called tarsal glands (also the outer layer of tear glands)
What is the nicitating membrane?
Outer layer of conjunctiva surrounding cartilage
What makes up the lacrimal apparatus?
Lacrimal glands and lymphoid follicles
What is the harderian gland?
The deepest gland of the nicitating membrane
What forms the cornea?
collagenous stroma and mucoid ground substance
What is the name of the outer surface of the cornea?
non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium called Bowmans membrane
What is the name of the inner surface of the cornea?
Descemets membrane
What is Descemetocele?
When an ulcer reaches Descemets membrane
Where does the optic nerve pass through the scelera?
lamina cribrosa
What is the Choriocapillary layer?
contains a capillary network that supplies
the retina
